Crowns & Bridges

Crowns are custom-made caps, often crafted from porcelain, that fully cover a tooth above the gum line—ideal when significant structure is missing. Unlike veneers, which only cover the front, crowns restore strength and appearance. Bridges, made using crowns, replace missing teeth by spanning the gap with natural-looking results. They help restore bite alignment and tooth contour, offering a functional and aesthetic solution for one or more missing teeth.

Uses for Crowns

Crowns are commonly used to restore a tooth’s function and appearance after procedures like root canals or when decay requires significant removal of tooth structure. They strengthen weakened teeth and restore normal function. Made from advanced dental ceramics, crowns closely match natural teeth and can enhance appearance. They’re also used to anchor bridges, cover implants, protect cracked teeth, or support teeth with compromised fillings for long-term durability and aesthetics.

Types of Crowns

Dental crowns can be made from various materials, depending on your needs. Cast gold offers unmatched durability, while porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns balance strength and appearance. All-porcelain crowns with zirconia provide excellent aesthetics and durability. Bridges, also called fixed partial dentures, come in several types—some removable, others bonded to teeth or implants. Materials like porcelain, gold alloys, or combinations are used based on the design and placement. We’re happy to discuss your options.

Procedure for Crowns

Crowning a tooth typically takes two to three visits. At the first visit, the tooth is shaped and numbed, then built up if needed to support the crown. Impressions are taken—digitally or with impression material—and sent to a lab. A temporary crown may be placed for protection. At the second visit, the permanent crown is bonded using durable dental cement or resin, restoring the tooth’s function, appearance, and strength.

Crown Care and Maintenance

With proper care, a high-quality crown can last eight years or more. Daily flossing around the crown is essential to prevent plaque buildup and maintain gum health. Habits like teeth grinding (bruxism) or jaw clenching can reduce a crown’s lifespan. Additionally, biting hard foods such as ice or candy may damage the crown or weaken its bond. Protecting your crown with good hygiene and mindful habits helps ensure lasting results.

Long-Term Care for Bridges

Bridgework requires the same diligent care as crowns and natural teeth. Daily brushing and flossing between all teeth—both restored and natural—helps prevent plaque buildup and maintain oral health. If you grind your teeth, wearing a nightguard is recommended to protect your bridge and surrounding teeth, preserving your dental investment. Proper hygiene and preventive measures will help ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your bridgework.
